3 Primary Law of Learning

In 1932, Edward Thorndike developed three laws of learning.  He studied many rules in depth. And then converted into 3 primary laws. They are:- the law of readiness, the law of exercise, and the law of effect. Edward Thorndike was a behaviorist. Thorndike’s primary law of learning plays an important role in the learning process. So, all three laws are also known as S-R learning. And these are also called basic principles of learning. Because they explain the fundamental rules of learning.

The teacher uses different learning methods. Using these laws improves insight learning.  It is very important for the teacher to have knowledge of all these laws. If the teacher will study using the primary law of learning. Then learning will be considered student-centered. And Students should also know the basic rules of primary law. So, all the rules are explained very deeply.

Learning is a continuous process It depends on mental ability. If the IQ level of learner is high. Then student learns quickly. Because high IQ level leads to fast learning.

Types of  Thorndike’s Primary Law of Learning

Thorndike’s Primary Law of Learning

Law of Readiness

This law explained that learning is dependent upon learning readiness. In this situation learner who learns either invites the object or rejects it. To take knowledge, the student has to be physically and mentally strong. This process affects the law of readiness. But there must be consistency in readiness. Therefore, students should learn through readiness.

Law of Readiness

The law of readiness is dependent on:-

Thorndike explained that learners’ wants, interests, and attitudes affect on learning. And wants, interests, and attitudes can lead to positive readiness related to learning.

For example, In class, if students are interested in the topic then they are ready to learn with interest. This process is called the law of readiness. Students can learn when they are physically and mentally adjusted (ready) to receive stimuli. In this law, the responsible process leads to the law of readiness in positive ways. And without reasonable process leads to not learning in negative ways.

The Law of Exercise

Thorndike explained that learners’ wants, interests, and attitudes affect on learning. And wants, interests, and attitudes can lead to positive readiness related to learning. The main effect of the stimulus on response. And this process becomes stronger with exercise.

Use of this law in life

    • Established discipline
    • Correct pronunciation
    • Improve handwriting
    • Develop Skills( Reading, writing, speaking, and listening)
    • Formations of good habits

For example, In class, if students are interested in the topic then they are ready to learn with interest. This process is called the law of readiness.  In this law, the responsible process leads to the law of readiness in positive ways. And without reasonable process leads to not learning in negative ways.

    Law of Exercise

The law of exercise always cannot be applied quantitatively because other factors are also responsible.

    • The law of used  When stimulus changes responses. And this relationship gets stronger.  So, this process is called the law of use.
    • The law of disused   When the stimulus does not affect the response. And the relationship continues to weaken. Then this process is related to the law of disused.

Law of Exercise

The Law of Effect

This law is an effect of learning. In this law, success is a reward and failure is a punishment. The trial leads to satisfaction and pain leads to dissatisfaction related to weakness.  This law impresses teenagers. This effect can be positive as well as negative. So, teachers should understand this law very well.

Example

When children solve a mathematics sum, they feel encouraged to solve more sums. If they fail then not be repeated. So, this process is called the law of effect.

Example of Law of Effect

In this example, the winning process leads to repeated behavior (related to playing a game), and losing in a game leads to not repeated behavior.

Educational Implications

Positive motivation develops in students. Children learn by trial and error method. A teacher prepares the student’s mind. And knowledge of the student is repeated. Because by doing this learning material gets installed in LTM.

Practice makes the student perfect. And as the student practices. Through this method, learning power becomes strong. So, the practice should be given priority.

Conclusion

If students follow the rule of exercise. Then their forgetting power is reduced. So, students should learn with the help of primary law.  Children have a limited capacity for learning. And, they do not know about different methods of learning.

Motivation is necessary to bring readiness. So, study the rules of exercise deeply.
